Today, Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement commenting on the issuance of the judgment by the International Tribunal for Lebanon, on August 18, in the case of the assassination of the late Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, indicated that Russia has always supported the activities of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, in order to conduct “a fair and just investigation and hold accountable those guilty of this crime, seeking the priority of unconditional respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Lebanese Republic, and ensuring Its stable and peaceful development.
And the statement continued: “We hope that the ruling issued on August 18 in The Hague will find a sound acceptance by all the Lebanese, and push them to join hands in order to safeguard the common national interests.”
Zakharova expressed Moscow’s belief in the necessity for Lebanese politicians to combine their efforts to extricate their country from its chronic crisis, and that achieving this passes through taking concerted steps to reduce tension and renounce violence, and to prevent Lebanon from sliding into a scenario in which events will get out of control.
Zakharova also affirmed that Russia would provide “all kinds of assistance to the friendly Lebanese people,” and Moscow’s call for resolving Lebanon’s problems within the framework of law and constructive dialogue, free from any external interference.
