Reports: Greece and Turkey are about to launch exploratory negotiations

Leaked reports revealed that Greece and Turkey are in the final stage of launching exploratory negotiations, which were suspended in March 2016.

The reports said that a telephone conversation took place between the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Greek Prime Minister, Ilene Sorani, and the representative of the Turkish presidency, Ibrahim Kalin, and under the supervision of Jan Hecker, the foreign policy advisor to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The scope of the exploratory negotiations has been determined, and related to the marine areas (the exclusive economic zone) and the continental shelf, an issue that Greece has raised from the beginning.

According to the leaks, it is expected that another contact will take place between Sorani and Kalin next week in order to put the final details to start the 61st round of exploratory negotiations between the two countries.

The negotiations are expected to start after the September 24-25 summit, during which the EU sanctions against Turkey will be discussed.
