Bhojpuri music and film industry’s challenge to vulgar slut form

A small girl standing there remembered the words of her mother when workers were on strike at the gate of a factory in Bokaro Steel City. He closed his eyes and started singing in front of more than three thousand people.

Thousands of people present there were demonstrating against the company, the father of that girl also worked there.

Riya Chakraborty

It was the first stage performance of Bhojpuri singer Chandan Tiwari and he went on to sing Bhojpuri, the well-known folk singer of Bihar’s Birha songs, Mahendra Mishra (or Missir).

Chandan Tiwari often heard his mother singing this song. She says, “The lyrics of the song are that the tears of the workers will not go in vain. There will be justice.”

She was barely ten years old and the daughter of a factory worker who did not want her daughter to sing in front of so many people. But when people praised Chhoti Chandan, his father also did not object to him continuing his singing.

Chandan Tiwari is now a popular Bhojpuri singer, who has been trying to bring back the dignity of Bhojpuri music, which has been recognized for slutty and pornographic videos for the last two decades.

Recently, a song went viral on social media in which Riya Chakraborty was called a prostitute. This song once again attracted everyone’s attention to the malevolence and sexism present in the Bhojpuri music and cinema industry.

But what Chandan Tiwari has thought is not easy, because most of the people now see Bhojpuri music as associated with sloppiness and vulgarity, which has been promoted by many people in the industry itself. These include Diamond Star aka Guddu Rangeela who has sung more than two thousand songs ranging from women to NRC and even Corona virus.

‘I refuse to sing such songs

She herself has been continuously refusing to sing songs. Such songs have become the identity of the industry.

Through auto-tune technology, many people are able to record songs that get “hits” on YouTube and other social media platforms.

In Bhojpuri-speaking Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, under the guise of the so-called democratization of the music industry, songs are being served which are too much sexist and too nationalistic. In this, the body of women is threaded to give something up or point towards something and to talk about Hindutva ideology.

In 2019, Bhojpuri singer Varun Upadhyay aka Varun Bahar was arrested for singing a song. The lyrics of that song were – “Jo Na Bole Jai Shri Ram, send him to the graveyard.”

The song was criticized saying that it encourages mob lynching of the minority community. Bahar was arrested along with the producers of the song and Bahar appealed to the right-wing groups like Bajrang Dal and Hindu Yuva Vahini for help.

There is also no censorship for such objectionable songs, and despite laws like Section 153A of the IPC to deal with hate speech, singers continue to sing songs that incite religious violence.

Sallu Khesari-2 of Bhojpuri Industry composed a song in which he talked about marrying Kashmiri girls and buying land in Kashmir after the end of Article 370.

Other Bhojpuri singers also released songs celebrating the marriage of Kashmiri girls and ending the special status of Kashmir.

Team Ranjan founder Ranjan Sinha says that there are more than 500 recording studios across the state. Team Ranjan represents artists such as superstars Khesari Lal Yadav and Pawan Singh who have given hits one after the other.

These artists started their career as singers like Guddu Rangeela and then turned to the silver screen.

The turnover of Bhojpuri music industry is more than Rs 500 crore annually and the turnover of Bhojpuri film industry is Rs 2000 crore.

About 300-400 films are made here every year. Ranjan Sinha says, “We have a lot of viewers but our customers are rickshawkals and migrant laborers who used to be viewers of B grade Hindi films. Our people don’t like their language.”

According to Ranjan, the Bhojpuri film and music industry has around 26 crore viewers and the film and album are also released in Nepal, Punjab, Maharashtra and West Bengal.

Their audiences are mostly migrant laborers who always remember the house and in these films there is always a hero who comes from the lower strata of the society, so they always like these films.

When Manoj Tiwari’s film father-in-law came to Bada Paiswala, he broke all records and such films started falling. In these films, people put money, who wanted to earn a lot of money.

However, things are slowly changing since 2012.

What is changing

Kumar Saurabh Sinha, content head of Yashi Films Pvt Ltd, says his company is like a Yash Raj film in Bhojpuri World and is now trying to make “good content” that can be seen sitting with the family.

For example, Khesari Lal Yadav’s films after 2015 are less vulgar. It is also an irony that most albums and films are shot in studios in Mumbai and there is no film studio in Bihar.

Regarding porn songs, Ranjan says that due to the arrival of internet, smartphones and YouTube, everyone can now upload songs and there is no censorship on it.

He says that these songs cannot be considered the picture of the entire industry, which is now trying to woo other audiences as well.

Khesari Lal Yadav
Right Now Times : Khesari Lal Yadav is a well known actor of Bhojpuri film industry.

Saurabh says that Netflix and other OTT platforms are not very keen on taking Bhojpuri content, so by the end of this year, they are going to launch their own OTT platform for Bhojpuri content.

Saurabh says, “There is a lot of profit in Bhojpuri film and music industry. After Punjab it comes second.”

Saurabh, who obtained a film degree from New York University and then started working with his uncle’s company, says that the Bhojpuri film industry initially followed in the footsteps of South Indian films and drew inspiration from Rajinikanth’s films, in which he spoke of a common man. The character was played.

He says, “Now we are making films focused on cities like Bollywood. Nirhua Rickshawala was made 10 years ago. Even in Telugu and other regional film industry, there was validity and later good content was created.”

They say, but the path is still very long. People easily criticize. People do not want to accept. They do not want to understand why songs and videos have become obscene.

Offensive songs written on Riya

On 11 August, National Women’s Commission chairman Rekha Sharma tweeted demanding the arrest of Vikas Gore alias Yadav ji, as the Bhojpuri singer used abuses against Bollywood actress Riya Chakraborty in her songs.

Riya is facing a media trial after her alleged boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput, originally from Bihar, committed suicide.

The 2-minute 36-second song ‘Riya To Ra **** Hai’ (Riya is a prostitute) was uploaded on 9 August on YouTube channel named Banadamaru. It was one of the many songs that were released soon after the actor’s death. This channel has 6.68 thousand subscribers.

In another song uploaded on the same day, the mother was abused by the actress. This song was uploaded by singer Ram Janam Yadav and the song has close to three lakh views.

Another song was uploaded on S Music 2 channel which went by ‘Pramod LIC’, in which Riya is told that ‘Whore tum kya bhaogi?’

Industry deals with nationalism and female hatred

But the Bhojpuri music industry has nothing to do with nationalism and female hatred.

Guddu Rangali, who calls himself the Diamond Star, composed a song in which he spoke of the corona virus entering a woman’s lehenga.

Double-meaning talk, sexism and hyper sexuality have been used for a long time, but since the arrival of Rangeela in the 1990s, there have been many such singers who have used abuses like Rangila and fluttering production. Made an important part.

Rangeela has clearly been the guardian of slutty. However, before and after them people adopted this method. His later singers, including Khesari Lal Yadav and Pawan Singh, took the lyrics and visuals of Rangila’s ugly songs as a legacy.

Rangeela is extremely popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and is called Holi Samrat. The words “lehnga” and “bhauji” are often heard in his songs.

The lyrics of some of his songs are “NRC apply hakhe na deam in apna lehnga” and “corona virus in our lehnga.

The first singer from Rangeela was Baleshwar Yadav, who was very popular and used to dance to girls on stage at his concerts.

Filmmaker Nitin Neera Chandra

Filmmaker Nitin Neera Chandra from Bihar says that he was initially criticized because of this, but then the upper class and upper caste people moved away from Bhojpuri language and that abandonment worsened the language situation and with it the fluttering And tags like Vulgarity added.

Chandra, who won the National Award for Mithila Makhan, attributes the dominance of Hindi language to the status of Bhojpuri music and cinema.

How were the first songs

Mithila Makhan

In the 1970s, when Baleshwar Yadav first came, he used to make songs that talked about the failure of the system and perhaps the state.

In the 1970s and 1980s, when the education system completely collapsed and unemployment skyrocketed, he wrote a song, ‘Bikai e babu ba pas ghoda’.

He used the analogy of a horse, which has been read and written, and it was showing the anger and distress of the youth who have degrees but no jobs.

Baleshwar also wrote songs of love, but there was no mention of the apathy of lovers and the pain found in love. Rather, lovers used to tease each other in these songs. There was social, economic and political glimpse in them. For example, in a song, a man is telling his wife that he will go to work in a coal mine (Hum koileri chal zaib e lalmuniya ke mai).

This song tells that in those days many coal mines were the only option. And his songs contained a sense of inattentive sexuality, which in a way was a matter of freedom for women. Which is rarely seen in today’s porn songs.

In today’s songs, women are introduced like any other item to the extent that the signature style of a popular hero is that he puts a key on the woman’s navel. Or women are presenting themselves as accessories to the audience who likes pornography.

The aggressive sexuality of these songs has become the hallmark of the Bhojpuri music industry. Baleshwar knew his market. Girls dancing in front of stage shows and audiences and later came a round of information and a trend of internet, which continued for years.

Journalist Nirala Bidesia is associated with Bhojpuri publicity and literary development initiative named ‘Akhar’. He says that it was not opposed because women were not allowed to sing and act.

Most of those who used to dance or were part of the video were outside Bhojpuri region of Bihar.

Chandan Tiwari remembers the time when his father was against his music.

She lived with her grandmother in childhood, who used to sing Bhojpuri bhajans and folk songs at weddings in the village temple. Chandan had learned to sing in this way. Later, when her family moved to Bokaro Steel City, she used to accompany her mother to the local Jagran, where she used to sing.

While there he found his teacher, who offered to teach him for free.

She says that it was not easy for her to be a part of the industry, which was full of the content of erotic slutty.

Recently he was trolled for singing Ram Ke Sehra by artist Mian Rasool. But they do not care about this.

Bhojpuri Music Industry

Bidesia says, “Bhojpuri has only given heroes and male singers. That’s why we are here.”

The manager of Guddu Rangeela kept making excuses on the phone and kept saying that the phone was not with Rangila or he had gone somewhere and would come later. Later he again said that he has gone out again. Perhaps stars are like this. And she is a star. A diamond star.

“Recorded more than 250 albums” and “More than 200 songs”, Rangeela became popular in 1999 at the age of 33 when her fifth album Ja Jhar Ke (Kya Swagger Hai) came out.

Then came successive albums such as Hamra How Chahi (I want ‘that’), Jeans Loose Kar, Hum Lem (I’ll take) and Juicy Holi. These songs were full of clutches and sex.

In 2004, the big Indian music company T-Series named him Diamond Star. Along with singing in 2006, he also started acting in Bhojpuri films. His company Sanjeevani Entertainment makes money through online and offline album sales as well as YouTube revenue.

Bhojpuri Music Industry

Rangeela was born in Chainpur in Siwan district of Bihar and was called Siddheshwar Nand Giri. He once wanted to be a playback singer like Kumar Sanu.

He started singing with Ashtajam songs at the age of 11 and later sang in Ram Leela and Shiv Leela. In 1993, he came to Delhi at the age of 17 and sang songs of Kirtan and worked in a garment factory.

He struck a deal with a new music company called Ek Ganga Music and released his debut album Jawani Ka Storm. In 1998, he joined them in the T-series and released Ja Jhar with him.

And thus Guddu Rangali became the poster child of Bhojpuri music industry and the formulas of sloppiness and vulgarity superhit album.

With the release of Manoj Tiwari’s father-in-law Bada Paiswala in 2003, Bhojpuri cinema caught everyone’s attention. The film grossed over Rs 4.5 crore at the box-office.

Resurrection story

Bollywood films were focused on a lot of cities and the audience of the state wanted to see their own films and the story of revival of Bhojpuri cinema and music started from here.

Due to the migrant laborers of Bihar, the market of such cinema and music is spread across the country. Bhojpuri songs became popular with the introduction of YouTube and cheap internet and mobile phones. Because of which more songs started being created. However these songs have their own references, which are often overlooked.

For example, there is some vulgarity in folk songs and abusive songs sung at Bihari weddings.

In the 1990s, the principal of a government school in Sahar, Bhojpur district, started feeling uncomfortable sitting in a bus going from Sahar to Sahar. Shanti Sinha says that she had to listen to obscene Bhojpuri songs for about two hours.

At that time, vulgar Bhojpuri songs were played in loud sounds in buses and autos.

Now retired, Reena Sinha says that I often used to fight with the driver and asked me to stop singing. The songs used to be about Salis and about sexuality.

But like most upper caste rich Biharis, she also speaks in Hindi. She says that my mother used to speak Magahi and I Hindi.

There are many people like us who refused to adopt Bhojpuri as their language.

Nitin Neera Chandra

Such songs dominated the market for a long time. These point to the fragmented identity of Bihar where the social, economic and cultural conditions of rich and educated Biharis are very different from those of the poor.

This condition of Bhojpuri became the reason for the rich Biharis to leave Bhojpuri. Because of which the versatility, vulgarity and apparent sexuality of folk songs were left far behind.

The picture changed completely after the arrival of Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirhua, Pawan Singh and Khesari Lal Yadav.

After the success of Manoj Tiwari’s film in 2003, several producers invested in the industry where women were used in sex symbols. In the private album, Bhojpuri was made more vulgar.

Neelum cassettes and Chanda cassettes started appearing in the early 1990s. Initially he used to make albums on Shiva Vivah and Shiva Kaleva.

There were more than 100 recording studios in Patna alone. Then came Wave and then T-Series. When Guddu made songs on women, people liked him. They sexed everything.

Why were they tolerated? Why did our intellectual and middle class remain silent?

Munna Pandey of Bihar teaches Hindi at Delhi University. He says, “Vinay Bihari was then the Culture Minister of Bihar and he used to write songs like this. There was no protest.”

“The demolition of Bhojpuri started with the imposition of languages in education, business and official work,” says Nitin Chandra.

After the announcement of the Central Government to close big notes, the Bhojpuri songs associated with it are making a splash.

Chandra says that Bhojpuri got displaced due to Hindi. Maithili did not happen like Bhojpuri because Maithili Brahmins were very conscious about their culture.

Amidst this noise and clumsiness, Chandan Tiwari is quietly researching and storing the songs she wants to sing.

She is currently living in Bokaro with her family. On the phone she says, “Things are changing. Our folk songs are sung by women. I don’t want to sing anti-women songs and when people are talking about Bhojpuri in a wrong way, then I presented Bhojpuri in a nice tone Have to do. “

She says that there is a beautiful aspect of her culture and she feels bad at times when porn songs are considered the music of Bhojpuri region.

She wants people to get introduced to the other aspect of this music or to say the beautiful aspect.

She says, “I have found many songs that women have sung during the Champaran Satyagraha. We have to be here to sing our folk songs. Sharada Sinha lives in Bihar. I am here too.”

Perhaps lehenga and bhauji songs and autotune will not be able to suppress these sounds. They have started speaking with a new pitch to save their language.

He himself has learned the language like Nitin Neera Chandra.

A movement has started and Tiwari says that he will clean the music and remove the tag of obscenity and return it to its original glory, when women sang songs of empowerment and Ram wore trolling and sehra despite everything.
