In a press statement, Davutoglu explained that Turkey has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Sea among the countries of the region.
He said, “An exclusive economic zone agreement must be concluded between Turkey and Egypt. The way to avoid the Seville map is to conclude that agreement.”
Davutoglu affirmed that he is still against the coup in Egypt, adding: “But diplomacy must be pursued.”
The “Map of Seville” was developed in 2000 by Professor of Maritime and Human Geography at the University of Seville, Spain, Juan Luis Suarez de Vivero, based on the viewpoint of Greece and Cyprus.
According to De Vivero, the borders of the area that Greece says is its continental shelf in the Aegean and Mediterranean, as well as the exclusive economic zone declared by the southern Cypriot administration in 2004, are the official borders of the European Union.
